What to Expect

Jump onboard a Kakadu day trip from Darwin. Travel 240 kilometres through rich floodplains towards one of the four World Heritage-listed sites located in Australia and uncover the unique and breathtaking natural splendour that has earned Kakadu its world-famous reputation. With over 20,000 square km of diverse terrain encompassing wetlands, ancient woodlands, stunning age-old rock formations and sacred indigenous rock art sites, this is Australia's largest terrestrial national park.

The first stop is on the Adelaide River, where you can see bull sharks, white-bellied sea eagles, some of the largest flying foxes in the world and, of course, the Northern Territory's most notorious reptile, the saltwater crocodile.

Here you'll have the chance to join the famous Jumping Crocodile Cruise (optional upgrade) and experience an up-close encounter with these wild apex predators or simply enjoy the stunning sight of the 238-kilometre long Adelaide River on its own.

You'll then head over to the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, where you can immerse yourself in the wetlands on the traditional lands of the Limilngan-Wulna people. The reserve is one of the very few wetland systems accessible all year round and is home to the largest populations of snakes within Australia (including the Water Python and Death Adder). It also hosts an abundance of diverse nativewildlife, including fascinating rare local and migratory birds, turtles and the iconic saltwatercrocodile.  Please note: This portion is for people who don't opt for the Jumping Croc Cruise.

Choose from one of the many different walking trails where you can explore the bird protection heritage site and enjoy taking a stroll through this wildlife haven.

Kakadu National Park

This Kakadu day tour then leads you to the Bowali Visitor Centre, where you can soak up the displays, information and presentations from the centre's experts about Kakadu animals, plants and landscapes before exploring the national park.

You'll also have the opportunity to learn more about this special place's rich indigenous culture, art, and history and read up on the fascinating stories and kinship laws of the traditional custodians. If you have any burning questions you want to ask about the region, the staff at the visitor centre are the best people to ask.

Tides can rise over six metres high during the wet season, and floodwaters can quickly transform a mild flowing stream into a mighty raging river. The crocodile population is so dense here it's estimated there are about 10,000 saltwater crocs in the park, but there are several viewing and feedingplatforms where you can safely spot these enormous reptiles at a distance.

Then, it's on to discover the hidden secrets of the World Heritage-listed sacred site, Ubirr. Experience stunning views over the spectacular Nadab floodplains and appreciate some of the oldest and best-preserved indigenous rock art paintings in the world, some dating back over 20,000 years.

Considered one of the longest historical records of any group of people on earth, the artworks document the ancient spiritual relationship and human connection the Bininj/Mungguy share with the land and environment and provide a fascinating insight into indigenous life and culture of thousands of years.

The final stop for the day allows you to explore the park. Bursting with native wildlife, Kakadu is home to a third of Australia's bird species and a fifth of its mammal species. There is literally nowhere else on the planet where you can experience the abundance of natural ecosystems and biological diversity quite like Kakadu.

There are over 30 established walking trails, ranging from easy to intense, for you to wander through.

After a long day of memory-making and adventures, you'll return you safely back to Darwin, arriving at approximately 7:30 pm.
