What to Expect

A visit to the Top End isn't complete until you visit Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Consisting of 13 separate gorges, Nitmiluk Gorge winds along 12km of sheer rock extending more than 70m high.

 

Make the most of your time with this scenic air adventure to visit Nitmiluk National Park for a well planned day filled with must-do experiences and spectacular sights. 

 

In addition to 2 hrs of scenic flying, you'll see the gorge from a different angle with a spectacular cruise. Plus, learn more about the world's oldest living culture with a stop at an Aboriginal cultural and arts centre. 

 

The Northern Territory experiences two seasons – wet and dry. While this incredible experience runs year-round, the itinerary varies slightly between the two seasons to accommodate changes in the landscape and varying access. 

 

 

Dry Season – April to September

 

7:15 am

Check-in at Kakadu Air Terminal.

 

8:00 am–10:00 am

Start your day with a 2-hr scenic flight over Mary River, Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks. Immerse yourself in the history, rugged beauty and culture of this majestic region with live commentary from the pilot. The highlights of this flight include iconic river systems such as the Adelaide, South and East Alligator, Mikinj Valley, Arnhem Land Plateau and Lightning dreaming.

 

10:00 am–10:45 am     

Land transfers to the cruise departure site. 

 

11:00 am–1:00 pm      

Jump onboard a 2 hr NitNit Dreaming 2 Gorge Boat Tour. A boat will take you to the end of the first gorge, where you will experience the beauty of the large boulders, rock pools and sands that make up the crossover to the second gorge. Surrounded by the limestone escarpment, the scenery is second to none. Along the way, cultural guides will share their knowledge about plants, animals, Dreamtime stories and culture.

 

1:00 pm–2:00 pm      

Refuel after an exciting morning with lunch at a local cafe. 

 

2:00 pm–2:15 pm      

After lunch, you'll have the opportunity to add on an additional scenic helicopter flight over the Gorge System. Choose from flight times of 10,12 ,or 15 minutes. 

 

2:15 pm–2:30 pm 

Take the short land transfers to the arts and cultural centre. 

 

2:30 pm–3:00 pm

Spend time exploring either Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre or Mimi Aboriginal Art & Craft (depending on the day of booking). 

 

Godinymayin seeks to showcase and nurture the creative and cultural diversity of the Big Rivers Region by providing a meeting place for all and to be the cultural oasis of the Northern Territory and the hub to connect the arts and culture of the Big Rivers region. 

 

Meanwhile, Mimi Aboriginal Art & Craft was established in 1978 and is a 100% Aboriginal community-owned not-for-profit art centre based in the township of Katherine, Northern Territory.

 

3:30 pm–4:30 pm     

Depart Katherine on a 1 hr ferry flight back to Darwin before bidding farewell to your pilot. 

 

Wet Season – October to March

 

7:15 am 

Check in at Kakadu Air Terminal Darwin

 

8:00 am–9:30 am         

Start the day tour with a 1 hr 30 min scenic flight over Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks. Departing Darwin, passengers will be treated to spectacular aerial views of the Adelaide and Mary Rivers en route to Kakadu. Next, take in the sights of the Arnhem land escarpment and plateau before viewing the impressive and prominent waterfalls, Jim Jim and Twin. Finally, finish the scenic flight with views over the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.

The Katherine Tour requires a high aircraft speed to complete a satisfactory itinerary in the planned time. To achieve this, and when confirming low numbers, you will fly in twin engine Cessna aircraft; these have a low wing; however, with a practised technique, the pilot will lower the wing for views of various attractions.

Darwin air tours leave from the departure lounge at 2 Slade Court, Eaton NT 0820 (Darwin Airport). The drive time to the Darwin CBD is approximately 15 minutes. Pre-booking a taxi is recommended, as car parking is not provided. However, there is a public car park on Pedersen Road, 250 meters away.

  • The minimum number of guests to book this tour is two
  • The Company reserves the following rights, to cancel or postpone any flight without notice should a circumstance occur that might represent a threat to the safe conduct of the flight or tour
  • Guests must provide their approximate weight; as the Company operates light aircraft, take-off weight is a safety issue, the pilot will not fly overweight, or compromise safety
  • All flights require a check-in 30 minutes prior to the advertised departure time

Cancellation Policy:

  • Reservations cancelled inside of 72 hours (3 days) from departure will forfeit payment in full
  • Reservations cancelled between 72hours and 168 hours (7 days) from departure are refunded 50%
  • Reservations cancelled beyond 7 days will receive a full refund
  • If cancelled due to COVID-19, passengers will be given the option of an alternative time and/or date. In the instance that rescheduling is not a possibility, Kakadu Air will be able to offer a credit voucher or refund the amount
  • Reservations cancelled inside of 72 hours (3 days) from departure are not given refunds.  Reservations are transferable to alternative dates or people. Passengers travelling are required to provide 24 hours' notice
