What to Expect

If you're short on time but still want to discover the rugged beauty of North America's most remote corner, this 8-day Alaskan adventure, taking in some of the most iconic locations, is just the ticket. It's known for its diverse terrain of open spaces, mountains and forests, with abundant wildlife and many small towns.

Itinerary

On this fast-paced journey, you'll catch the state's greatest highlights, including the imposing Harding Icefield, the enchanting Kenai Fjords, the jaw-dropping Denali National Park, and the charming town of Talkeetna. Go north and treat yourself to a week of scenery and smiles.

Day 1 – Anchorage

You can arrive any time on day one; there are no activities planned other than meeting your group and local CEO, who'll review the details of the week ahead. Of course, if you arrive earlier in the day, feel free to explore the pretty city of Anchorage on your own.

Keep in mind that a lot of what there is to see and do in Alaska is weather-dependent, so your CEO might need to adjust the schedule as needed based on weather.

Day 2 – Anchorage to Seward

Drive south through the Kenai Peninsula along one of the Unites State's most scenic highways, the Seward Highway. Pass between cliffs and ocean and through the Chugach National Forest surrounded by mountains.

Then, it's time to stretch your legs and hike one of Kenai Fjords National Park trails to the Exit Glacier and Harding Icefield, seeing the size of this natural phenomenon in person. The 11.9-kilometre round trip of the Harding Icefield Trail is a spectacular day hike that utilizes backcountry and on-trail trekking. Starting on the valley floor, the trail winds through cottonwood and alder forests, passes through heather filled meadows and ultimately climbs well above the tree line to a breathtaking view of the icefield

Day 3 – Seward

Enjoy a free day to explore around Seward. Choose from a variety of optional activities to suit your interests. Soak in the gorgeous coastline views from the comfort of a boat while keeping your eyes peeled for whales on a Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise, or visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, a public aquarium that also functions as an ocean wildlife rescue centre.

If you didn't get enough hiking on Day 2, take to the Coastal Trail Hike in the Caines Head Recreation Area. It can be reached by boat or foot from Seward and offers sweeping views of rolling alpine meadows and the North Pacific Ocean. Alternatively, you can take a sea kayaking tour to explore the stunning surroundings of Resurrection Bay, following a naturalist guide along the scenic western shoreline, spotting wildlife along the way.

Day 4 – Seward to Talkeetna

Travel north to quaint Talkeetna. Visit the Wasilla Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Museum, filled with historical information and fascinating exhibits; it's sure to pique interest and draw you into the unique Alaskan culture. Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of "The Last Great Race". Countless mushers and their loyal dogs traverse a diverse landscape in a race for over 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome. The museum's exhibits and displays detail this iconic Alaskan event's past, present, and future. In addition to these exhibits, if you visit in the summer, you will even have an opportunity to go on a dog-led cart ride!

You could also opt to take a scenic flight over the area, float by raft or go further afield by jet boat on the Talkeetna River to learn about local flora, fauna and early settlers to the area. However, you can also stay in town to shop or sample beer from the local microbrewery.

Day 5 – Talkeetna to Denali National Park and Preserve

As your drive north and keep cameras at the ready for the stunning scenery on the way to Denali National Park, where you'll spend time exploring. The area is well known for its diversity of wildlife and Denali, the highest peak in North America, formerly called Mt McKinley. Discover the dynamic glaciated landscape providing large rivers, countless lakes and ponds, and unique landforms which form the foundation of the ecosystems that thrive in Denali.

You'll also stop at the Denali Visitor Center to learn about the flora and fauna throughout Denali National Park before a dog sledding talk and demonstration by the park rangers.

Day 6 – Denali National Park and Preserve

Hop on a Denali National Park bus to Eielson Visitor Center on a full-day excursion to take in the beautiful flora, fauna, and mountains in the park. The journey takes approximately 8 hours and shows off the stunning wilderness of Denali. Keep an eye out for moose, bears, and caribou!

Day 7 – Denali National Park and Preserve to Anchorage

You have a free morning to squeeze in some extra Denali optional activities before the trip back to Anchorage. Hit the rapids on the Nenana River to soak in the gorgeous scenery and get a rush of adrenaline. Alternatively, enjoy some more Denali hiking along popular trails like the Mount Healy overlook trail and Horseshoe Lake trail.

Then, in the afternoon, take in the scenery on the journey back to Anchorage, where you can choose to join your new travel friends for one final meal together to reminisce about the fantastic adventure you've all had.

It is customary in North America to tip service providers such as waiters, bartenders and taxi drivers, at approximately 18-20%, depending on the service. Tipping is an expected - though not compulsory - component of your tour program and an expression of satisfaction with the persons who have assisted you on your tour. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. There are times during the trip where there is an opportunity to tip any local guides used. Recommendations for tipping local guides would range from $2-8 USD per activity depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.

Also at the end of each trip, if you felt your Chief Experience Officer did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline $5-10 USD per person, per day can be used as a guide. If your CEO(s) exceeded your expectations, feel free to tip more.
