What to Expect

Discover one of the hidden gems of Oahu's Windward Coast as you begin your one-of-a-kind kayaking and hiking adventure. Kayak at your own pace through the beautiful Kaneohe Bay and across to the island of Mokolii, known as Chinaman's Hat, where you can hike around the Basalt islet for stunning views of the east side of Oahu.

After a briefing and some onshore instructions, get geared up and head out for your 3-hour self-guided experience. Be wowed by views of the epic cliffside mountains that form the Koolau Mountain Range as you paddle over a sunken lava plain sheltered by a barrier reef. The views of the Windward Coast will be reminiscent of movies like Jurassic Park, Battleship, 50 First Dates and many more since plenty of movies were filmed in Kualoa Ranch, just across the way.

It’s between a 15-30 minute paddle to Mokolii, so with plenty of time to explore, you can then choose to hike the circumference of the small island, or if you are up for it, hike to the top for a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side. The climb to the top is quite an adventure, while short, it is quite steep and there's a more technical climb to get all the way up the last part of the rocky face of the islet so it is recommended for more advanced hikers.

Please keep the area beautiful by keeping on the designated trails, picking up litter, and avoiding stepping on the reef. The islet is a bird sanctuary, so be mindful of the Sheerwaters that nest in the ground on Mokolii.

Kayaking conditions are generally calmer in the mornings and while it can be good for beginners, we suggest the tour is best for individuals who are experienced in kayaking or are comfortable kayaking in the ocean. If you are looking for a real Oahu adventure, this is it!

We meet you just outside Kualoa Regional Park. Park rules prohibit kayak deliveries inside Kualoa Regional Park, however, the location we drop off and pick up is extremely convenient and makes it easier for you to get in the water. All details are in our confirmation email or will be provided on the day of your kayaking experience.

Amazing views. Adventure. To feel alive. It’s accessible. It’s something active to do, but not too active that it’s extreme. But for me, it’s the views. You go up a trail on the side of Mokoli’i and get a panoramic view of the whole windward coast, the green Ko’olau mountains all from a small island in the ocean. It’s so cool! You don’t even have to hike all the way to the top to get that view, although it’s admittedly better from the top if you can brave the bit of rock climbing to get there.

Under normal conditions, yes. It’s set in a very sheltered area at the far north end of Kaneohe Bay, so it benefits from the shallow water and shelter of the barrier reef. That said, this kayaking experience is in the ocean and conditions can change rapidly. If conditions are stormy or extra windy, we suggest relocating to the Kahana River location about 10 minutes away that is much more sheltered and perfect if you are looking for jungle scenery.

We cannot guarantee you will see wildlife but you will see some if you are looking it! Birds, fish, and turtles are really common in all of our kayaking spots. Consider renting some snorkels to have with you on your adventure.
