Frequently Asked Questions about San Francisco Small Group City Tour

What should I wear?

The weather in San Francisco is variable, and the sides of the van are open, so dress accordingly. April and May, as well as September and October, tend to be the warmest months. June, July, and August are foggy and colder than you might expect. The rainy season runs from November through to March.

All year round, sunglasses and sunblock are recommended. Dress in layers that you can add or subtract over the course of the day. There are blankets and heavy jackets on the bus for your use as well.

You are welcome to bring snacks on tour. The tour will stop at a well-stocked market where you can buy lunch, snacks, coffee and more before heading out to Alcatraz on tour. Alcohol is not allowed on Alcatraz Island.

Yes! You will get out of the bus to take photos at least at Aquatic Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, at the city view stop, and the stop for lunch. We may also get out for a quick neighbourhood walk or at other sites depending on guest interest on any given day.

The tour vehicle is an open-sided customised 12-passenger Nissan NV van. This does not have a wheelchair lift or ramp and would require two steps up into the seating area. The driver can fit a folding wheelchair into the back cargo area.

Alcatraz Island

Much of Alcatraz is steep and hilly, so be prepared for walking long distances uphill. The distance from the dock to the prison at the top of the Island is about 1/4 mile (.4 km) and the elevation change is 130 feet (40 meters). This is equivalent to climbing a thirteen-story building.

Visitors unable to make the climb up Alcatraz’s roads may take advantage of S.E.A.T. (Sustainable Easy Access Transport) Tram — an electric shuttle that meets each scheduled arrival at the Alcatraz dock and transports visitors requiring mobility assistance from the dock to the prison building. S.E.A.T. returns visitors requiring mobility assistance from the prison building back to the dock at regular intervals throughout the day. Visitors requiring mobility assistance may be accompanied by one attendant in their party if space is available.
