Tequila, Tacos, and Tombstones: Old Town San Diego
Taste the Mexican influence of California's first town, full of amazing flavours and colourful history, as you discover San Diego's Old TownWhat's Included
What to Expect
Combining gastronomy and history into a one-of-a-kind experience, travel back in time as you explore the 'Birthplace of California'. Discover the events and people who have transformed Old Town San Diego into the cultural destination it is today, and enjoy a night of authentic food tastings, traditional cocktail samplings, haunted tales and fun!
Join your knowledgeable guide on an in-depth 2.5-hour journey through the historical eras, from the early Spanish settlements to the establishment of Mexican Independence to the California Gold Rush. Sample some amazing Mexican cuisine from a few favourite Old Town restaurants, as well as a traditional dessert to top it off. Not only will you satisfy your craving for tantalising tacos, but you will also experience the flavours of a homemade tortilla made right in front of your eyes. The food on this tour is enough to make a full meal for most people, so bring your appetite.
With deep roots in the Mexican culture, Old Town is not only bursting with cultural flair and great food, but plenty of tequila to indulge your senses. While this is not a tequila tasting tour, you will get the opportunity to sample a few tasty customary cocktails with various types of tequila.
Old Town didn’t survive hundreds of years of history without adding a few ghost stories to its name. Visit one of the oldest graveyards in San Diego where you will find out why the past still haunts the present. Stop by the Whaley House Museum, thought to be America’s most haunted house, and possibly encounter one of the ghostly spirits who still frequent this historic home.
The Venues
Cafe Coyote
This Old Town staple is famous for its handmade flour tortillas that will have anyone salivating at the smell of them. Taste their popular carnitas tacos and their house margarita.
Tequila Factory
Perched upon a hill, this restaurant provides incredible views of Old Town and the San Diego Bay. Enjoy a talk about tequila and its origins, and taste a unique tequila brand paired with an unconventional fruit. You will also be served a fish taco to enjoy while you take in the view from the patio.
Casa de Fred’s
This vibrant restaurant offers both traditional Mexican dishes, Baja inspired flavours, and American-infused dishes that can only be found here. You’ll taste one of their favourite grilled tacos made with their fresh flour tortillas and fresh margarita.
Tuetano Taqueria
Birria is a slow-cooked beef with many spices, and the folks at Tuetano specialise in this dish. You’ll taste a quesabirria taco with either a cucumber michelada or a local brew.
Old Town Ice Cream
Of course, you can get delicious ice cream here, but we come for a Mexican sweet treat – their fresh homemade churros. Nothing ends a food tour better than a recently fried dough spear laden with cinnamon and sugar!
