This unique food and wine experience from Port Douglas is a chance to taste some of the best food and wine that the Atherton Tablelands has to offer. The tour will take you through a variety of contrasting landscapes from lush rainforest, crops, dairyland to stunning ochre savannah plains. The rich volcanic soil allows farmers to grow diverse crops including bananas, coffee, sugar cane, avocados, mangoes, macadamia nuts, and citrus, which you will learn about as you taste your way around the regions 'Food Bowl.'
Stop 1: Rainforestation Nature Walk
The first stop is Rainforestation Nature Park amidst the Kuranda rainforest, a local family-owned business that provides an exclusive opportunity for breakfast. Set on the balcony of a Tree House restaurant, enjoy a delicious breakfast of Tropical fruits (seasonal) Mungali yoghurt and Wattleseed damper, a selection of tropical jams, and local tea and coffee.
Stop 2: Skybury Coffe & Papaya Plantation
The next stop is on the top of the Great Dividing Range, approximately 520 metres above sea level. Skybury has well-drained soil, no frost, and an annual rainfall of around 800mm per year. This provides the ideal climate for growing 90,000 coffee trees including the bourbon variety of Arabica coffee and the country’s largest producer of sweet aromatic and red varieties of papaya. Here, you'll enjoy a cup of coffee, explore the cafe and Roastery, and sample lunch of local produce.
Stop 3: Mount Uncle Distillery
Ten minutes down the road the tour arrives at Mount Uncle Distillery, North Queensland's first and only distillery. Here, you'll stop for a delicious fresh lunch of local produce then off to the distillery to taste award-winning liqueurs and spirits. You'll have time to wander around this stunning property nestled in coffee and banana plantations, with beautiful gardens and some friendly animals.
Stop 4: Gallo Dairyland
Next, you'll travel towards the historic village of Atherton. Driving through this thriving hub, you'll see a patchwork of amazing farmland and rolling green hills. The tour arrives at a fully operational dairy farm spread across 1000 acres of rich red volcanic soil with delicious handcrafted chocolates and a gourmet cheese factory. Here, you can buy cheese or sample irresistible Swiss-style filled chocolates. Meet the friendly animals before heading back to Mareeba through a variety of diverse crops.
Stop 5: The Humpy
The tour travels through a patchwork of amazing farmland, diverse crops, and rolling green hills for a tasting and shopping treat. The tour stops at ‘The Humpy’, the best place to go to for freshly harvested Atherton Tablelands produce straight from the growers. You'll find vegetables, tropical fruits, different varieties of nuts, dried fruits, jams, and sauces. Here, you can taste seasonal fruits and the different flavours of hot local peanuts and macadamia nuts. You'll have time to browse this quirky grocery store to purchase goodies for the rest of your stay.
Stop 6: Golden Drop Winery
The tour continues to Golden Drop Winery, which was the first commercial Mango Winery in Far North Queensland. They produce mango wines, mango port, sparkling mango wine, and fortified liqueur style citrus cellos, which come in mandarin, lemon, lime, and dragon fruit. The tour drives through their immaculately kept mango orchards and into the tasting room where you get to try all 11 of the range. Then before we jump back in the bus we treat you to some Daintree Icecream Company's famous mango sorbet to freshen the palate before heading to the last stop of the day!
Stop 7: Platypus Hut + QLD Wines And Beers
The last stop of the day crosses the savannah Outback, past giant termite mounds and classic red dirt to a unique 160-acre private property. Here you can soak up the stunning rainforest and pristine environment, which is a sanctuary for bird and animal species. Watch out for a passing kangaroo and head down to 'The Platypus Hut' where you can sit in a tranquil setting as the sun goes down. Watch for dive-bombing kingfishers and the elusive platypus or dip your toes into the most beautiful mountain stream. You'll also get to enjoy tasting some Queensland wines and beer, Macadamia nut butter, and local bread.
