What to Expect

Discover Marrickville's indie craft beer scene on this half-day guided brewery tour as you visit three amazing local breweries. Go behind the scenes to learn more about the venues, from how they started, their brewing process, the brewing ethos of the brand and of course taste some of their flavourful beer and spirits!

Packed into three hours, join your expert local guideand beer enthusiast as they take you through the history of beer, a technical tour of the breweries, and a beer tasting session at each brewery all while walking within the golden triangle of Marrickville. You may even get the chance to visit a distillery as an added highlight to your day.

Which breweries the tour visits on the day does change depending on brewing operations, making these brewery tours truly unique and different each time. The focus is on providing a good mix of places, people, and craft beers to offer the best possible experience. A list of the breweries you may visit is highlighted below in more depth; however, if you do have a must-see beer spot, please let us know when making your booking and we’ll do all we can to make it happen.

The Venues

Started by two Americans who met in Australia, Batch is the brewery you want to visit if you like something that's always new! With a core range of four beers and a further rotating six taps in the brewery, Batch Brewing Co likes to put out a new beer every 10 days. Even if you’ve been here before, there will almost definitely be something different for you to try each time you visit.

Three guys began brewing out of Young Henrys as gypsy brewers. Since then, the boys have taken Young Henry’s first brewhouse and opened up their own brewery in Marrickville. Based in an old commercial laundry with twelve taps and a pool table, a lot has changed in three years for The Grifter Brewing Company. Try the Fresh and Clean IPL, paying homage to the previous tenants.

What started as a dream between two mates to have a beer with a childhood hero, turned into starting a beer company with legendary former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke. Bob’s only condition for getting involved? That his royalty share is donated to Landcare Australia, the environmental charity he established in 1989. One year later, on 6 April 2017, Bob poured the first schooner of his namesake beer to officially launch Hawke’s Brewing Co., proudly independent and Australian-owned.

Philter was born out of a backyard chat between Marrickville mates and neighbours, Mick Neil and Stef Constantoulas. Beer lovers and brand experts, between them they had the business, marketing and trade expertise but they needed the perfect brewer. It all fell into place when they met Sam Füss, one of Australia’s first female brewers with more than 16 years of experience in the craft industry. They busted onto the Sydney beer scene with the release of their XPA in 2017 and quickly set themselves apart with a look that nods to the aesthetic of iconic 1980’s Australiana. Philter brought a little Expo ‘88 to the traditional local craft line up.

Poor Toms is the progeny of two best mates. They share ‘Thomas’ as a middle name, a suspicion of tradition, and a passion to bring real pleasure to people’s lives. In 2014 they joined forces with Marcel Thompson, one of the Trans-Tasman Bubble’s most experienced gin distillers. Marcel earned his stripes by producing both Gordon’s Gin and Tanqueray Gin in New Zealand on the copper pot stills tracing back to pre-war London. This creative partnership would rewrite the gin credo.

Originally hailing from South West Sydney, Stockade Brew Co began life in October 2015. It offers a core line-up of 4 sessionable beers, including Hop Splicer XPA, 8bit IPA, Chop Shop Pale Ale, SESH Mid Strength Ale and Duel Hoppy Lager. In addition to this, an ambitious roster of bi-monthly limited edition brews sees renowned beers such as The Mountie Maple Imperial Stout, Bella Rossa Woodfired Red Lager and Old Money Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout hit the shelves and taps for a short period of time. They have won in excess of 60 awards across the likes of the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBAs), the Craft Beer Awards (CBAs), the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show and World Beer Awards (WBA’s) where they won the title of “World’s Best Imperial Stout”.

Sauce’s Mission: To further Australia’s taste for full-flavoured, quality beer, and to convert as many bland lager drinkers into craft beer fanatics as we can! Sauce Brewing Co love the diversity of craft beer and creating flavoursome beers that can be enjoyed by everyone. Whether you’re a hop-head, a sour-freak, or you just like good quality, drinkable ales, they have a beer for you.

Wildflower focuses on fermenting beers with a mixed house culture of brewers yeast mixed with wild yeast and bacteria foraged from New South Wales. Their goal is to balance the tart, funky characteristics of their house culture to deliver beers with length, nuance and subtlety.
