What to Expect
Have you always wanted to learn to surf but don't know where to start? Then, join an Aloha 2 hr Small-Group Surfing Lesson! You'll enjoy personalised instruction at fantastic value, with just 2-6 participants allowed per class.
It's common for surf schools to put everyone into one big group, but from 15 years of experience teaching beginners, the crew know that's not ideal for learning. Instead, small groups are safer, more fun, and you'll understand how to surf faster!
Your equipment hire is included, so you'll get geared up with a soft-top beginner surfboard and full-length wetsuit correctly fitted to you.
The class begins with a 20-minute beach theory, where you'll learn ocean safety, paddling and pop-up. Then you'll head into the water, where your instructor will help you onto small waves and cheer you on. Before you know it, you'll be riding waves with a massive smile on your face!
Plus, as a bonus, after each of your lessons, you will receive a free 1-hour surfboard hire to practice your new surfing skills!
The tour departs from the meeting point at Main Beach or Tay Street Beach. You can note your preferred location when booking or let your instructor choose the best place for the conditions on the day, which they will confirm via email.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely! When you come for your first lesson, your instructor will begin with 20 minutes of instruction on the sand before entering the water. That way, you learn the concepts in a safe and relaxed atmosphere and have time to ask any questions.
Once you’re comfortable, your instructor will select the best waves on the beach for your level. They will be next to you in the water the entire time, helping you onto waves, cheering you on and providing feedback.
A medium fitness level is recommended. Bad balance is no worries at all!
Any injury that prohibits you from laying on your stomach, doing a pushup, or standing up, might be prohibitive for surfing. If that causes you pain, it's recommended you seek medical advice before attending a lesson.
Yes. The team will provide everything you need. You'll have a selection of over 80 full-length, comfortable wetsuits for every shape and size, from children's size 6 to men's and women's XXL. Wetsuits are cleaned after each use.
Surfboards are quality beginner and intermediate surfboards specifically designed to help you learn faster. Boards sizes range from 6'6″ to 11′. When you arrive for your lesson, your instructor will select the correct surfboard for you tailored to your height, surfing experience, and conditions that day.
Having the correct equipment is essential. If your board isn't right for you or the conditions, there's a good chance you won't catch any waves. Your instructor wants you to have fun, so they make sure to provide you with the right gear!
The lessons operate out of two locations – Main Beach and Tay Street Beach, allowing the team a fantastic variety of surf conditions to teach students. They are 2.5 km away from each other. Upon selecting your lesson, you will be asked if you have a preferred location, and your instructor will do their best to accommodate your request. If you don’t mind, they will choose the best place for you based on the day's conditions. This location will be in your confirmation email.
Please meet at the Hibiscus Surf trailer at the confirmed location 15 minutes before your lesson to get ready.
The team ask that you show up 15 minutes before the lesson's start time. This is to fit you with the wetsuit, sign waivers and meet your instructor. In addition, this time allows you to get the routine stuff out of the way so that you can get in the water shredding sooner!
Your instructor will only take you in conditions that are safe for learning. Most of the beginner lessons start in chest-deep water. Your instructor will monitor the waves before and during your lesson, and if at any time they see that it’s approaching too big, they will get everyone out of the water and reschedule.
Safety and fun are the highest priorities. If at any time you do not feel safe or are not having fun, they will stop and see what they can do!
All the equipment you need for surfing is provided! Some suggestions include casual swimwear to wear under your wetsuit, a towel, and plenty of water and sunscreen. There are also stands nearby for snacks and food if you’re hungry after your lesson.
Surfing in the rain is super fun! However, in the unlikely event it’s too windy or the waves aren’t good for learning, the team will reschedule as soon as they make the call. If you can’t reschedule, they will offer a full refund and hope to see you another day.
The team have found that about 90% of people stand up and ride waves in their first lesson. With the fantastic, experienced instructors by your side, offering advice and sharing their love of surfing with you, they will give you the best opportunity to stand up and ride waves as soon as you are able.
The group lessons generally have 1 instructor per 4–6 people. Groups are small so that they can provide quality, personalised instruction. The goal is for you to learn how to ride waves fast so that you can enjoy surfing. Based on 15 years of experience, the crew believe keeping the group to 4–6 students is the best way to offer quality, value and most importantly, fun!
